The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Set in a future North America, civilization as we know it is non-existent. What's left of civilisation is split into 13 districts of poverty and an opulent 'Capitol'. Every year, as an example of the Capitol's power over the districts, The Hunger Games are played and put on live TV for everyone to watch. The Hunger Games takes one male and one female child or teenager from each district; after several days of training they are thrown into an elaborate arena to fight to the death. The one person to win the Games is given enough money to free their family of poverty for as long as they live. Told from the perspective of Katniss, a teenager from district 12, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins traces the steps of her and her fellow district member, Peeta.

Senica: The Hunger Games is an amazing read. The story is unlike any I have ever read, fast paced and insightful. The setting held my attention right away. The idea of the Games kept me reading.
