About Treats Design
Ande Axelrod of Treats Designs creates distinctive jewelry that is colourful, bold and whimsical, yet sophisticated and surprisingly lightweight. She works primarily with the material tagua, also known as vegetable ivory.
Ande discovered tagua while travelling in South America, and found a vast creative potential in this natural material, along with an opportunity to express her commitment to ethical and sustainable values in her artwork. When peeled and polished, tagua looks and feels identical to elephant ivory. Harvesting tagua causes no harm to animals or the ecosystem, and provides an economic incentive for local communities to protect the rainforests. Tagua nuts are dried for several months in the equatorial sun, then are carved and handcrafted into a wide variety of shapes. Organic dyes are used to give the beads the beautiful bright colours that are the heart of Ande’s designs.
Her pieces are inspired by the spirit and atmosphere of both tropical rainforests and our beautiful BC rainforests. In her North Vancouver studio, she combines unique beads crafted of organic tagua with sterling silver, leather, hemp and rubber, blending design with eco-consciousness.
